Sasagamine & Yumemidaira Trekking tour
A giant trees standing in a deep mountain forest on the border between Nagano and Niigata
Sasagamine Plateau is located at 1300m above sea level and is surrounded by mountains of over 2000m to 2400m. People started to inhabit this deep mountainous area since 18th century.. Yumemidaira is a forest that we can get to by across the Sasagamine dam. There used to be a lumbermill here, and forestry wood workers and their families lived in this deep mountain forest. We are going to walk on a hiking trail, which used to be a trolley rail route, and will get into the deep forest. Then we will see a huge old Katsura tree, (Maybe over 800 years old) which can be called the elder of the forest, stands proudly there. Since it is a course with few ups and downs, even beginner hikers can enjoy it. Why don't you walk in the beautiful sasagamine forest and refresh your mind and body?

Imagine the lives of woodworkers here 100 years ago
In every winter, this forest is completely closed due to the heavy snow and people couldn't go to and from the outside world. But about 30 to 50 people used to live here all through the year. I'm sure it was simple, and it was a life that we today have a lot to learn.
